A Quick trip Out To Gem tree

HI All,

Well we did a spur of the moment trip out to Gem Tree today. Very obvious that tourist season is finished as we were the only people there besides the the lady who owns it with her hubby. For those that don't know of it, Gem Tree lies on the Plenty HWY about 140 km north east of Alice Springs. It is a pretty well set up camp ground with very clean ammenities. They do have 4WD tracks that can be used and we intend to check some of these out in the future. Today was really just to get out of the house and test the SPOT system some more, well we would have if we had remembered to turn it on, with all the last minute running around I put it on the mount but forgot to turn the tracking on - doooh!

Went there with my wife about 10+ years ago. She is a geo so went along to dig up som garnets. Took the old Camry and did some psuedo off road and nearly crapped it out. heard there is a good trip from there heading east along the Plenty into Queensland.

When we where there the tourits (besides us) where almost as old as the rocks themselves

looks like a nice quiet spot mav, quite green for out that way, future camping spot to get away for the day

Funny you should say that Samo, we did a reccie of the camp grounds to pick a good spot for our camper when we get it next year. :lol:

My kids loved Gem Tree both times they were there, they spent ages looking at all the gem stone souvenirs and watched while the stones being cut and polished in the shop.

On our first visit we went from there onto do the East MacDonnall Ranges 4x4 route and the they spent hours searching for garnets at Ruby Gap. Ever since then they have been at me to go back and do some prospecting.
