  • TRIP REPORT :GH Mtns 24th Jan

Well, it was just the two of us for a quick little half day run.

We met up at the BP servo on the highway at 8am with the thousands of other weekend travellers  ... as one would expect for an Australia Day long weekend
The drive north up the highway wasn't very busy at all at that time of the morning (I think they were all still back at the servo) and we made it to the Forestry Fire Tower lookout in no time.

    We aired down here...

And a pretty pic of the backdrop for todays driving.

It's been a while since I've been to the Glasshouse Mtns and it's changed a lot  Most tracks are either forestry trails or EXTREME  (and no... we didn't tackle any extreme tracks)
So, we did a loop of Mt Beerwah, had a quick play in the muddy tracks on the northern end and then came across the usual creek crossing at the base of Mt Beerwah.

I tried one line and got myself well and truly stuck... I think Gordon's got pics of me up to my axles in muddy water

... so Gordon snatched me out backwards and then he took the more sensible line... with no problems at all.

As I only had a morning pass out we called it a day at this point before I did anymore damage to my car...
Turns out the bash plate didn't like being snatched backwards over a clay mound ops:

Thanks for a great morning out Gordon
Hopefully next time it'll be a bit longer and we can find some more tracks to play on.

    [edit to add]
Here's a track log from today...
    Cheers, Leon

Were you tempted to throw the MaxTrax into the mud... or maybe that just wasnt' feasible... up to your axles and all.

Can't wait for those pics .

Re: GH Mtns 24th Jan... trip report

When we walked the line the bottom was about 6" deep (slush) so I figured the tyres would cut through that no problems... but... with the extra weight of the vehicle it just dropped and stopped
I thought to myself... I wonder if the maxtrax would help get me moving forward again but it did get deeper a bit further in so I didn't want to get stuck above sill height.

In hindsight it probably would have been better to snatch forward and pull me through the hole but the thought of damaging the bash plate didn't even enter our minds...
          Cheers, Leon

Re: GH Mtns 24th Jan... trip report

Hi all, I have got two pics of the trip that I have to get of my camera soon and post. I am hoping Monday to do this.

The trip was short, but relatively scenic with good weather and no other 4WDs around. I think they were all going away on the long weekend.
I filled up at BP Burpengary and with the car park nearly full, with a stack of Prados, I was not sure which one was Leon's. We met up inside BP and shortly were off with Leon leading into Glasshouse. We went down a length of power line track and went up to the transmission tower. We had a look at the track that looks like they abyss at night, and although it was sunny, it was quickly determined to be extreme, especially since many rain storms had washed the top soil form the track leaving smooth rock surfaces and large steps. Maybe if we had an older truck and 35s we might have given it a go. But not this time.

We had a look around and ended up at the normal crossing up from Jeep Creek (We went the other way). I took of the thongs and waded in with a big stick. There was about a foot of so of mud on the bottom, and as Leon said, it seems as though it would be below sill level. So he said he would give it a try. We determined it was good practice to secure the snatch strap just in case. Leon put the front wheels in whilst I took the first of two photos. He then dove head first into the crossing and pretty well instantly had all wheels spinning freely. Even with lockers there was no chance. As soon as I realised Leon needed a snatch I put the camera in the Prado. So no more pics sorry.

After we got Leon out, I checked out a new track through the crossing, so just before going head first through it after checking the mud depth etc, we found that Leons bash plate was damaged. After driving through the crossing we headed to Petes place to remove the bash plate.

All in all, it was a good day with one minor hickup. We had to cut the day short due to previously arranged events.
Thanks Leon for a good day and hope we have more Pradopointers out there next time.

Sorry all, unfortunately when I went to copy the pics off the camera's internal memory onto the SDCard, I inadvertantly deleted the pictures of Snaga getting bogged. So guys, if you have never seen Snaga get bogged, you will have to wait a little bit longer.

Its a shame I couldn't make it fellas. It would have been nice to finally meet some PP members.
Oh well maybe next time. How did you go with the Bash Plate. Did you manage to massage it back together?

i look forward it future pics from the weekend.

                Cheers

                  Hi ya stewy,

Hopefully when we're a bit more organised and can do a full day you'll make it along.
As for the bash plate... I gave it a bit of a bend and fold and it'll eventually have some resemblance to it's original shape but I'm going to throw a heavier, after-market bash plate under there when the pain of the last repair bill settles
                  Cheers, Leon
