  • Outback SA- Part 6

    Follows on from:

    Part 5

Finally got enough spare time to carry on with our trip reports.... being stuck inside on account of the heat has its benefits

Birdsville... amongst those that have never been there is an assumption that’s it's a virtual ghost town on the fringe of civilization, with no facilities except a pub and a race track...

Nothing could be further from the truth... during the cooler months it's a hive of activity with travelers coming and going. It has a great pub, modern school, hospital, great caravan park, awesome bakery, a museum you can spend a half a day or more in, two fuel outlets (one being the famous Birdsville roadhouse) police station, tourist information center and very friendly locals....

    The important stats:

How you don't want to arrive, this was one of three rolled vehicles, a destroyed van and a crashed bike at the roadhouse.

The Birdsville Working Museum... excellent way to spend a half day or so... jam packed with all things Australian.

Bella the museums mule.... friggin huge... like Clydesdale HUGE!

40mm of rain in the days/week before we arrived meant everything was fresh and flowering.

Awesome bakery... you must do lunch here if in Birdsville.

You may have seen this vehicle before in some of the 4wd magazines... Birdsville recovery service.. if this bloke has to come get you it's gonna be expensive... the average recovery costs $4-5K

The place to drink... they were out of Coopers when I was there... I had to drink XXXX  ... what a crime.

    A very modern town hall...

    and... don't laugh... pedestrian crossings

The town’s water supply... comes from a bore at a temperature of over 100 degrees Celsius  .. flows to several cooling ponds before being filtered and pumped to town...

The famous Birdsville Roadhouse... frozen milk and bread, expensive fuel... supplies only come in once a week.

Ruins of the Royal hotel, also once used as a hospital.

The caravan park (and internet cafe!!)
Do yourself a favour..live without power and get a campsite down by the water... fantastic!

You have to get up damn early to get a picture of your vehicle in front of the pub during the peak season

    Airport in back ground...

Across the footy oval towards the bakery...

There are 6 of these in town....when it's busy you have to queue....

Across from the pub... cheapest fuel in town by 2-3 cpl.

Just outside of town is a tree with a blaze carved into it by Burke and Wills on their ill fated trek.

New hospital... the old one is next door and open to visitors (small museum)

Along the Development Road we came across some wild horses... God knows what they eat out here..

Our lunch stop along Dillons Highway, Cadelga Outstation ruins...

I swear... this bastard was the size of my hand :!:

More to follow... stay tuned folks...

    Goto Part 7:

        Re: Outback SA- Part 6

Mick, once again a brilliant trip report and some outstanding pics. I am hoping to do some more outback SA travel this year with the family during our mid-year school break around the time of the PP GTG. Your trip reports and photos only add to our anticipation of this travel.

ps. Just sent you a PM.

        Cheers. 8)
