    Re: Simpson crossing- Sept 2009

Just a quick post to give an idea of the distances we are covering each day and keep people up to date with the planning and prep.

    Day one,
    Adelaide-Pt Augusta-Woomera-Roxby Downs-Coward Springs. 552km sealed and 177km dirt.

    Day two,
Coward Springs to Peake turn off 158km dirt. Then 40km return of slow track to Peake ruins and back. Another 33kms of dirt to Algebuckina bridge.

    Day Three,
Algebuckina bridge to Dalhousie Springs via Eringa Homestead and Mt Dare. 325km dirt.

    Day four,
Dalhousie Springs to Birdsville (Via French track, south on Rig Road, north on Colson Track, east on Frech track, south on Erabena track, double back to Lone Gum, east on WAA line, north on Knoll track, east on French line to Poeppel corner, East on QAA and Matilda byway to Birdsville)
    568km mixed high range/low range.

    Day eight,
Birdsville to Clayton (Via inside track) 425km dirt

    Day nine,
Clayton to Warren George 132km dirt and 280km sealed.

    Day ten,
Warren Gorge to Adelaide 20km dirt and 345km sealed.

Warren Gorge is optional and people may choose to drive straight through to Adelaide.
Lunch stops will be worked out on the run as will sight seeing stops.
Sat Phone to be picked up at Mt Dare and returned in Birdsville with costs shared between all vehicles. Hire will be around $125 all up so not much per vehicle. (This is a back up to the HF).

Don't forget your SA Desert Parks Pass.

That's it for the planning apart from confirming dates, confirming attendees, shared meals planning and a pre-trip BBQ to make sure everyone meets and greets, equipment and vehicle check.

Not sure what happened to my reply :? anyway the short version is pretty much yes.
From memory there are not to many (if any) good spots to camp on vertical tracks (e.g Erabena track and Knolls track) - very hard to find firewood and
      very windy during the night...

Bumped into the Pink Roadhouse Website yesterday

There are some pretty rough and ready maps detailing things on the Maps page but it also included a good Points of Interest chart with UHF channels as well as a map.

Finally a recommended Tyre Pressure chart as well. Love how they have given the Subies their own category

            Re: Simpson crossing- Sept 2009

We used the "Points of interest" brochure on our first run up the track. Very handy for sights to see and the UHF channels as well.

There's a compulsory stop at the Roadhouse this trip for a beer (To support the locals of course  )

                  Schaffer,

Get yourself the RAA map of Outback SA for this trip. It's quite useful and of a high standard for general touring like this. It shows all of the POI's along the Oodnadatta etc.

Free if your a member (Get the whole set of SA for free while you can, I hear a rumour they will be charging for them soon)

$4.95 if your a non member.

Way ahead of you there Mick. Have had some goods maps form RAA and other sources since early/mid last year. Only mentioned the POI map out of interest and also because I recently stumble across the Pink Road House website. I'm assuming that the UHF channels listed for the POIs are just the repeater stations to use in that area?

Yes, they are the local station owners stations and not for general chit chat. They are also pretty quiet unless they are mustering etc.... But they are monitored and a good option should you need assistance.

Picked up a voucher to get one 10% off at the Show earlier in the year. Misplaced it and found it about a fortnight after the end date. Oh well. Only $10.00 off. Not the end of the world. How long do the Desert Passes last for? is this a year, month, one hit wonder (lol)?

Not long to go then. Jeepers, you've brought it forward nearly a month.

Still can't go. Might cross tracks tho. I should be up to Lake Eyre again early August if my comrades can sort themselves out.
