Yeah well this was the easy stuff, it gets a lot worse further down. You guys will enjoy it but I would make sure that everyone in your group has a lift kit installed as a minimum.

As you have already indicated, these laws are strongly policed and enforced, including remote areas.

The "Intervention" is a government initiative to restore Aboriginal communities back to places that are safer for women and children to live in. There are other spects to it like the debit card that they can only use to buy certain things with like food, clothing, etc but not alcohol.

The police had a blitz the other day and caught people carrying booze out to communities, they confiscated 849 cans of beer, 6 litres of spirits and 16 litres of spirit mixed drinks. Grog running is rife out here.

For us Mexicans, what does this mean for the GTG? Should we not pack alcohol at all? I normally carry a slab and throw 2 cans in the fridge each morning.

I will respond to the group via email on this issue rather than place a comment on an open forum, I think that is the best course of action in this instance.

Re: TRIP REPORT: Finke River Gorge - LOTS OF PICS

Im surpised this is an issue really. Us locals dont take any notice what the the signs say anyhow because it doesnt affect us. You will be fine to bring what alcohol you want into the National Parks as long as your responsible and clean up after yourselfs. The Police only check the folks going into the communities (or the dodgy ones looking at grog running), and even if you happen to go to one ie; Herrmansburg, keep it well hidden. Dont drink in Public and you will not bring attention to yourself. Tourists rarely get searched, there mainly looking for drugs anyhow. The Police know most tourist will be carrying at least some alcohol and hence more then likely will not be stopped and searched. This subject has truly been blown out of proportion, just a case of chinese whispers really. When I go on a overnighter I always have it and ive never been stopped or searched or even heard of other people been stopped and searched. Theres nothing wrong with taking a few ales with you when you go camping. Although if you happen to have 10 slabs then Qs are going to be asked. Whats a camp fire without a few brews?,

              Zook.

Re: TRIP REPORT: Finke River Gorge - LOTS OF PICS

Sorry to disagree here Zook... but your logic is flawed. Worse, it has the potential to result in a fellow PPointer being arrested and having their rig seized all because of a misunderstanding - which isn't a defence under the law!

Wrong - the laws apply equally to all Australians.

Wrong - it is an offence and against the law to possess, control or consume alcohol in a restricted or prescribed area without a permit or lawful excuse (which are limited).

Wrong - police often conduct random searches in the prescribed areas. Also see my first comment.

Wrong - just because its never happened to you (yet), doesn't mean it won't happen to others. You don't want to be the first!

Yes there is. If its in a prescribed or restricted area its against the law. Severe penalties apply including the seizure of all associated vehicles and equipment.

This is a serious issue for people who have never visited the Territory and might be unaware of our unique laws, especially given that some PPointers will, at times, be entering/traveling through prescribed or restricted liquor areas. :!: :!: :!:

And for the newcomers to the forum... by Dave you mean Ntpryce... or do you mean Zook? No, I think you mean NtPryce .

Just wanted to be clear about which point of view is being supported.
