  • TRIP REPORT: Glasshouse Mountains - 26 April 2009

Well...had an 'interesting' trip up to the Glasshouse Mountains over the weekend. Things were going nicely when I came to a very large boghole, which sensibly (or so I thought as I was by myself) I avoided by taking a track around it. Yeah..not such a good idea.

This is where I went (well a section of it anyways)

and this is how it ended up

I was lucky enough to find (after a lovely walk in the QLD countryside) another Prado, to whom I am most grateful for snatching me out (using my gear). I then snatched him out about 200m up the track (on the way out) and he helped out again on the way out (this time from the front). It seemed the entire track that was so easily traversed had turned into a complete pile of pooh.

The only real amusing side to this tale is that a trailbiker whom I told 'its a bit boggy' decided to forgo my advice and went headlong into the mire; he sank up to his seat and my thoughts were that I was indeed lucky that I did not go too far into it.

Halo, did you drop your tyre pressures and throw the maxtrax under the front wheels, i thought that would have got it out.

Yeah tried that first. It was the MaxTrax that took the plastic panel off the drivers door  ; The front wheels were not making contact with the ground, I was actually fairly lucky as the underbody of the car was on firm ground and preventing me sinking further. All that ground in front of the vehicle is a crust of mud about 5-10cm thick over a quicksand like mud.

And that is what I love about 4WD'ing . A nice Sunday drive turns into an adventure to remember.

I've been in similar circumstances... the ground looks solid and suddenly not so solid..

Well, I'm glad to hear it all turned out well (except for some minor damage) and no doubt you've made a new friend. Now did you sign him up to PP?

        Cheers,
        LFaR.
PS: Was the plastic panel easily repaired?

Yeah panel back in place now. It just clips back on. Not 100% perfect but hardly noticeable.

Halo, that water hole you avoided is where I did the damage to my bash plate... I dropped my front wheels in and sunk... then D4D-GXL snatched me backwards and my bash plate caught on the clay edge

Hope the rest of the day was good to you...
That reminds me... I owe Gordon a day out at GH as our day ended early with my damage.
            Cheers, Leon
