We went last year, definently worth the trip.
Plenty of free camping between the track & town, if you want a spot at the caravan park you better book now.
If you camp between the track & town, take a garden rake with you, the burs are a real PITA, we borowed someone's rake to clear them but they still got every were, & they hurt.

Looks like you had a great trip. I am guessing the vehicle needs to be well prepared
Mate, you shouldnt have any trouble coming up from Adelaide, It should be all tar to Maree by now (they were almost finnished when we come through last year). Then its the Birdsville track all the way up, If dry you will have no problems it pretty much just a long well maintained dirt road, except for the gibber at the northern end of the track. Watch your tyre pressures and you wont have an issue. There will be LOTS of traffic to & from the races so no need to worry about braking down & not seeing anyone for days. Every 2nd person we met between Dubbo & Birdsville were on there way to the races.
