seriously, I am impressed with the way your rig handled those wombat holes. Did any of the other vehicles (without lockers) attempt the holes and how did they go? I haven't tried the prado on these yet - too scared I might blow a diff or CV - try explaining that one to the missus. I am now seriously thinking about get at least one at the back.

Re: Trip Report: NSW: Jul 26 '09 Newnes State Forest

      Andy,

The difference that diff lock made to my vehicle is incredible, & I am not kidding :!:

The only other vehicle to attempt the track was WBY1. He did eventually make it to the top after a couple of attempts but could not do it in the one go like I did. He had to exit to the right about half way up, as getting traction was very difficult due to diagonal wheels up in the air, & then came back in a bit further up & did make to the top but not as easily as I did. As you see on the video, I was going very slowly with obviously no damage occurring to my vehicle. This is where a diff lock excels; no need to charge up tracks at speed like those young blokes in their Hiluxes had to! And I've owned a couple of Hiluxes in the past & I swore blind that one day I'm gonna get me a locker :!: and I did....

If you go 4wdriving on a regular basis, then I reckon a diff lock should be seriously considered. You should come out to Newnes (or wherever) on a day trip & be passenger in my vehicle to see how it performs. One thing to keep in mind with the ARB diff lock as I have, is that the LSD centre is removed, meaning that your diff is then open, same as the front, or locked when you press the button in the vehicle. I have not noticed any difference in normal on road driving with the LSD centre removed. Of course you need an air compressor mounted permanently somewhere in your vehicle (I put mine under the passenger seat).

      Glenn

Re: Trip Report: NSW: Jul 26 '09 Newnes State Forest

Yeah I could only do the bottom 1/3 and top 1/3 of the wombat holes and this was with a bit more momentum than Glenn. Not sure how sketchy it looked from the outside, CV/diff-wise (if anyone has any photos, could they post them up ). the middle section had deeper holes which I wouldn't have been able to get through without at least some decent suspension. but then I still wouldve needed a bit of momentum which would have been risky for CVs and side steps with all the boucning around. but as Glenn proved, with lockers you could take it slow and safe. if the budget allows definately go with a front locker as well- if not it could be argued that the front is a better place to put it than the rear in a prado due to the hopeless front wheel travel.

Great trip reports guys. I have been away for a couple of days so haven't had a chance to check my photos as yet, but will post up any good ones.

Thanks again to GH4wd for organising the day and WBY1 wheel placement advice and guidance on the difficult tracks.

Looking forward to the next trip.

First of all I'd like to thank Glenn for organising such a great day. On my first ever 4WDing trip he was a great help throughout the whole day.

It was great meeting everyone as well. Im definantly hooked.

As for my pics, unfortunately my 2yr old son decided our digital camera belonged in the pool so I have lost all my pics taken on the day bar a few on my phone which I will upload later on.

Looking forward to the next day out.
