        Re: Litchfield National park, NT

I would have loved to be able to come but have moved back down South.

It is a great drive, and well worth the walk to Sandy Falls. Everytime I have been there we are the only ones. It is best to check with Litchfield Park regarding the status of Reynolds River.

        http://www.litchfieldnationalpark.co...ional_Park.htm

I have found the first crossing from the bitumen Litchfield loop to be the deepest and fastest flowing. The base is fine but I had previously crossed in October and the water only made it over our bonnet but it had not rained much yet. I heard that there has been a bit of rain up there already. Some of the other water crossings are fun as well.

About half way through the track there is a sandy section where quite a lot of people get bogged, generally because they do not have enough clearance for the build up sand between the wheel tracks. A standard SR5 Hilux was stuck because of this last time I went through. They then lay tree roots down as traction to get out and leave the roots on the track. First time I went through I kept the momentum up and the Prado got stabbed by two, half burried, six inch diameter tree roots that tried to polevault us. I only mention this because it is better to lessen the pressure and walk through this bit.

Enjoy, I am a bit jealous

Re: TBA Oct : NT Litchfield National park Weekend Trip

Adam - are you looking at doing this as just a day trip or overnighter? If we were to tag along, we'd probably consider camping at the Litchfield Tourist Park on 23 Oct and then heading out to do the Sandy Creek track early the next morning as a day trip. Back to camp overnight, then perhaps visit Buley Rockhole on Sunday morning before heading home to Darwin.

Re: TBA Oct : NT Litchfield National park Weekend Trip

We were looking at an overnighter and do the whole track over the weekend. Leave early Sat morning and roll out the trust swag at either Sandy Creek or Surprise creek falls for the night and continue on Sunday. I will ring up the ranger station just to find out approx travel times and road conditions as I'm just going off the 4WD guide at the moment.

Re: Sat Oct 24-25 : NT Litchfield National park Weekend Trip

The first crossing is practically dry now and there is only about 300mm in the Reynolds so it will be a pretty easy run, albeit very dusty. A friend did it in a Honda CRV last week so it must be very dry. Needed a couple of tugs through the sand that's all. There is still a slight trickle coming over Surprise Creek Falls, and make sure you take the effort to walk into Sandy Creek Falls on the way. It is really worthwhile. There is also the Blyth Homestead if you are interested in a bit of history. I would love to come along but too many things happening this time of the year. Hope you enjoy it.

                    OK, now I am jealous.

Have not been down that track for some years. One other thing to check out as you head down to the turn off is The Lost City, a granite outcrop that has the look of a lost city (wonder how they figured the name for that)

REaly wish I was up in Darwin to do the trip, will have to console my self with the fact I am in Prado Point central WA. Have a great day out

For your information fellas, the track between the lost city and Blyth Homestead is now closed.

The only way to get to the lost city is off the Litchfield loop. It is worth seeing through.

Last time I went there we were under attack by 3 million flies and it was about 90 degrees.

Adam ~ we'll most likely now be heading to the Litchfield area the weekend of the 30-31 October 2009 instead of the dates you have proposed. Sorry.
