  • TRIP REPORT : WA - Circumnavigate Karratha off road

Just in case someone is keen

Me and a few mates are going to circumnavigate karratha off road on the weekend - its not hardcore but should be good fun

Let me know if you want in

    The plan is:
Meet up in the prestigious Nichol West subdivision,
Traverse the drains and head out to the Carr Civil quarry,
Head south along the 7 mile creek, under the bridge and around Gap Ridge,
Find a track and head east,
The first major hazard, Crossing Madigan Rd,
Keep heading east along tracks as we find them between the hills and north west coastal hwy.
There are some rocky climbs through here that you can tackle, or drive around, it depends on how adventurous you are,
Second major hazard, crossing Karratha rd,
Cut around the south side of the industrial estate
Get onto the SEC track for a few hundred meters then head north
Follow the fence line through to the Nichol river tidal flats.
Poke around here for a bit, maybe head up to the river mouth
Then head back west along back beach, past the boat ramp
Head up the dune (there is a drive around if its too soft)
Drive along the beach area around the back of the golf course and searipple camp,
Keep heading west along the tracks finding a way around Pegs Creek,
Follow the tracks back to Carr Civil quarry and home from there.

I reckon that 3 hours should cover it, and then some time cleaning the car.

    Planning to start at 1pm

*** WARNING *** Please familarise yourself with the PP trip disclaimer before agreeing to attend.

Note, this is not a hard core mission, standard 4x4 will be fine. I will be trying to get our car stuck so that I can use the winch (which has never been used) to test it out and learn a bit about it before I need to rely on it.

    Cheers,

    Will

Re: Sun Nov 1 - WA Day Trip : Circumnavigate Karratha off road

      The trip went really well,

No other PP members came along but we had our Prado, a Hilux, a series 2 Disco, Patrol, Pajero and 2 quad bikes.

After leaving my place there was about 200m on the bitumen before we got off road, from here there are dirt and sand tracks until you have to cross the bitumen at Madigan Rd (say 20ft of bitumen)

Then its dirt and rocky tracks before crossing Karratha rd, another 20ft of bitumen,

Then its tracks all the way to the tidal mud flats

Then the homeward run back along the beach

With a bit more tidal flats and a few dirt tracks and then back onto the bitumen and 200m home. And then the cleaning starts. A good trip at a leisurely pace taking about 4 hours with heaps of stops. All in all a fun way to see the town and less then 500m of bitumen was travelled in the whole thing door to door.

Special thanks to Clancy - Union Rep

and Toby - Health and Safety advisor

      Cheers,

      Will

Ebay. With limited access to toy stores i get alot of my stuff over the net and ebay. They are black duck, and since every work 4wd i have ever had (and still have) are fitted with black duck i figure they must be tuff. THey are good for the back seat for the dogs and also for generally using it as a luggage space. We have more comfortable ones in the front though. If you get full sun on the canvas seat covers then sit down wearing shorts you can almost hear meat cooking.

            Cheers,

We are doing this trip again on sunday morning, except this time on trail bikes if anyone is keen.

However, I don't think that a prado will keep up.
