  • TRIP REPORT : NT - Hermannsburg to Glen Helen

This trip was one of those rare events that only pre organised 4wd clubs had the privilege of obtaining permission from the traditional owners. The club in question is the Outback 4wd club of Alice Springs. I manage to get an invite form the President JP as well as my good friend Mark (Happy Trails), sadly Mav and his family didnt attend this trip. All I can say about this is they missed a great trip.

The day started with a meet at Flynns Grave just out of town. 14 vehicles turned up, 2 more then approved although they still went ahead. A quick stop at Hermannsburg for refreshments then we aired down and hit the road. Due to the area being traditional lands, I cannot give too many details about how to get there, sorry. The drive in featured plenty of dusty tracks, a few wash outs and dry river bed crossings. In some sections you would swear that if you stopped in some of the deep bulldust you would be stuck for sure. We finally got to the river bed and saw these stunning rock formations.

Another 1/2 an hour on the track and we reached the waterhole. The first thing we all did is head down and go for a dip. It was 37'c and very hot, the water was the purfect temperture. Sadly though alchohol was banned on this trip due to the location, but if you wanted to you could have swam across the waterhole and headed up to Glen Helen Homestead for a few. Strangely nobody did.

Mark and I decided to hit the track home as the heat was starting to take is toll on us and the kids and also due to the lack of shade. A few folks had already left before us and had a chance to take some more pics on the way out.

All up it was a great trip, not to much of a challenge although some wheel clearence was needed as a stock 120 Prado found out. No bogged vehicles , no recoverys made, our vehicles where covered from top to bottom in red talcum power dust, we were a bit burnt but we had a blast,

    Zook.

We were really keen to do this trip but thanks to the wrench monkey that cracked our transfer case we did not want to chance the temporary repair by going off road. Happily the transfer case housing is being replaced this coming Thursday.

Oh come on, I only had to stop to move 2 rocks to make it easier for the 2 prado's following us  (typical send the stock prado in first if he gets stuck don't drive that way in)
As an aside the other half has agreed that when we finish putting all the gear from the old 4wd in we will need to raise the prado up from terra fima abit (have only lost just over 25mm from stock height so far) but we managed to gain some bush pinstriping on our 3 month old baby  (Scratch X to the rescue hopefully)

It was a great day and and we got to see some more interesting scenery around our patch of Oz; will post some more photos once photobucket gets it's act together

              Hi FC,

no punt intended, although now I know who the mystery Alice PP forum user is now. Had me guessing, I thought it might have been somebody else.

Ill sure to say hello in the future. Anyhow must be a 120 thing, broken bits on Mavs etc, ill sick with my trusty 90s

Cheers for adding the pics, sure was hot out there. At least there was a good turn out, thanks for the input,

              Zook.
