  • TRIP REPORT (on pg 2) Sydney - Womerah Range track

OK guys we have obtained permission from National Parks to organise a private day trip along the Womerah Range track which runs between the Putty Rd, Colo Heights area, & the Webb's Creek area at the Hawkesbury River.

Please note that National Parks have stipulated a maximum of 5 vehicles per trip

Post up if you're interested :!:

This is a great trip; the track is easy/medium going these days as the old extreme "Heartbreak Hill" section has been bypassed with a new track. At the base of the hill is a small campground with pit toilet & a shelter (came in handy on the last trip as it rained). A few aboriginal sites along the way too. The track is about 52k's in length so it will also be a fairly long day time wise :!:

Unfortunately we have to pay National Parks for the privilege of accessing the area; cost will be $70 per vehicle. As they only give out the key to the gates one at a time, we are definitely guaranteed a "Wilderness Experience" as Ranger Richard puts it! No other vehicles will be in the area at the same time, it's all ours for the day. Of course being in a declared wilderness area, we will do the right thing & look after the place

Sorry for the short notice for this trip, there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get to this stage. A big thanks to Ryan & Kenta for their input to make this happen If we can't get a December trip on the go then we may look at one for the new year but would be good to catch up with some PP members for the Xmas season.

PLEASE READ THE DISCLAIMER BELOW; IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO AGREE TO THE TERMS SET OUT THEREIN THEN PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND. THIS INCLUDES PRADOPOINT MEMBERS & THEIR FAMILIES & FRIENDS!

    viewtopic.php?f=29&t=5215

OK this trip is now confirmed for Sunday, December 6th

As of November 24th, confirmed attendees are:

    GH4wd
    Prado887
    Signature035
    WBY 1
    Yota
    JeffH

Meeting at: The Ampol garage on the Putty Rd, Colo Heights. The garage is about a 35 minute drive from the Windsor bridge crossing the Hawkesbury River. Just stay on the Putty Rd. & head north :!: It's on the right hand side of the road. You can fuel up here if required & there is a small shop & toilets also.

    http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&sour ... 76,,0,11.5

Time: 8:30 am, departing at 9 am. The start of the Womerah Range track is about a 15 - 20 minute drive up the Putty Rd. Finishing will be around 5 or 6 pm area. The exit from the track will be in the Webb's Creek area, those heading back to Sydney can take the ferry across the river which is right next to Wiseman's, & then back down the Old Northern Rd.

Bring: Prado, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, camera, sense of adventure!
*If anyone has a chainsaw....bring it along just in case we encounter a fallen tree across the track. Ryan & I have drag chains but if it's a big tree, could present a problem ie: having to turn around & go back!
*Please ensure that all people attending have shoes to wear; we may do a short walk or two through the bush to aboriginal sites if time permits.

We will be on Channel 16 UHF. Topograhic maps covering the area are: Six Brothers, Auburn, St Albans.

Cost is $70 per vehicle payable to Ryan as he has already paid NP for this trip.

    Cheers,

    Glenn

Sounds good Glenn, the 6th is the only weekend I got free this side of Christmass.

Is it really $70, I know it NSW NPWS but $70 each sound bloody steep.

I nearly forgot to advise that there's a maximum of 5 vehicles allowed per trip ops:

Yes it's $70 per vehicle.

This does buy you access for 2 days & 1 night stopover at the Heartbreak Hill campground if you want; or a day trip only. There is no difference in price. There is an option to spend another 1 night at the campground, cost is another $40 per vehicle.

Yep it aint cheap & NP hold all the cards

At this point in time I thought a day trip only would be the go as you can check out the area & if you like it, can always return another time for an extended stay.

Rob, this track was very popular in the '70's & '80's with the trail bike & 4wd folks. Of course in those days it was Crown Land so no prob with access. Travelled the track several times on the trail bikes. Heartbreak Hill was a section about half way along which was extremely difficult to traverse, even on trail bikes :!: I think it was an old logging track years ago. I've been on 2 NP tagalongs, one in 2005 & the other in March last year. The tagalongs are put on about 2 times year & they are booked out very quickly. Cost is $20 for adults & $10 for kids. Worth doing if you can get on one, otherwise it's do your own trip & pay more :!:

I would love to do this, but unfortunately 6th Dec we are having a family day (celebrating birthdays for son & daughter-in-law). If it comes up again I would like to be in it.

Re: Sun Dec 6 : Sydney - Womerah Range track

hi Glenn put me down as a tentative. just got back late sunday night so I've got a bit on for the next few weeks. hopefully the 6th i can keep free.

Im pretty sure Ive done this area before, very easy standard.

trying to work out how long a day this will be- last time I came from gosford way, so how long does it take to get to the track from say windsor or pennant hills (or somewhere else in Sydney)?

                    Hi Kenta,

Have put you down as a tentative; to get to the Womerah Range track entering from Putty Rd; it's about a 50 minute drive from the Windsor bridge. With the NP tagalongs I think we usually get to the start of the track around 9:30 - 10 am & finish at Webbs Creek, which is right next to Wisemans Ferry, around 6pm. From there back to the city allow another 1.5 - 2 hours. Yes it can be a long day but worth it.
                    Cheers,
                    Glenn

No worries Mal as Glen said there will always be others ,

also looking into working with NPWS into a bi-monthly access to gated off areas of wilderness in the national parks
                            for us to enjoy ....

Bugger, looks like I've missed the cut-off for this one. Glenn, if you could put me on the reserves list and if someone has to pull out I'd like to come along.
Otherwise, hopefully I can make it along on the next one you guys are able to organise.
