Pilbara and Rudall River NP

Hi WAPPers,

We are planning to get up there again this year sometime around July/August.

Some fantastic country even as dry as it was last year (hopefully better this year), very remote but perfectly do-able if you are sensible and well prepared. We did this on our own and had a great time with no problems to speak of. And we have all the gear that we think is necessary to be safe.

Would anyone be interested in a 2/3 week trip up that way around that time???

If you make it as far north as Karratha let me know. I could be keen for a day trip depending on the work schedule.

We were up at Rudall River in July last year for the second time and each time I go up there I become more and more obsessed with the place. We spent a warm night sitting around the camp fire at Desert Queens Baths watching the full moon appear over the top of the Broadhurst Ranges and each time I see a full moon now it reminds me of that night.

I'd be up there again in a flash but my daughter is facing spinal surgery :cry: around that time so that counts me out . I hope you have a good time and I hope TC Laurence filled up some of those empty water holes, it certainly was dry up there last year.

A workmate has just gone through there in his new troopy by himself. He works out at Blackstone and went to Perth via Warburton, Rudall NP and down through the Pilbara and karijini.

I'd be keen and have time off in July and August on long service leave and was looking at a differnt way of travelling to Nullagine so this could be the ticket.

Update on my mate who just went up there. He went via Sandy Blight Road through Kiwikurra and across to Gary Junction, Jenkins Track, over Canning Stock Route and onto the Wapet Road approaching the national park from the east.

Reckons it was pretty easy going, all tracks in relatively good condition (what we call good - usual washouts, corrugations, smooth bits, etc). No water in the river but the water holes were pretty full. Day time temps were still quite high and the flies were extremely annoying.

He had no issues except loosing a slab of tread from one of his near new Cooper STCs on the troppy.

He also said that all the roads were ok for good quality camper trailers as long as you take it easy.

Sounds like I might have to either go this way to the park or come back via that route - which may be the best option for me with all my contacts at Wiluna, Warburton, Warrakurna and Kintore.
