  • Anne Beadell Highway (1) July 2010

Heading off to the first stop at Hay on Friday 2nd July. Second stop is Port Augusta before and early start up to Coober Peddy, a quick fuel up and a lefthand turn onto the Anne Beadell.
Most preparation have been completed and will post some pics over the weekend. We bought a sand flag and found it would fit onto the Sovereign Bullbar and allow us to open the bonnet. So I fitted it to the tow bar and then had to wortk out some way to open the back door. Bit of a cahllenge but it is done. Trev

Re: Anne Beadell Highway (1) July 2010

With a week to go we have removed the back seats which means we can sleep in there if we have to. The main reason is to increase storage and get the weight between the axles. The spare wheel and tyre is behind my seat with the fridge behind Carol. Made a "cargo barrier" on an aluminium bar into the rear passenger grips with rubber stoppers on each end and some Bunnings carpet over the bar which makes the cabin kinda cosy. Rear vision is a bit limited but I drive using the side mirrors and it is far better than when towing a caravan. The car has been serviced and the transmission fluid changed (at 58,000 km) There is a layer of shade cloth over the radiator an aluminium light plate from the base of the bull bar to the engine cross member. The are slots on the plate to allow a bit of flex. I've tightened the bolts in the bullbar and replaced one. Most of the nuts have threadlock on them and the nylocs on the number plate, guard etc have that black Sikaflex flexable glue on them. I've lost a few number plates on various tracks, but no more. We have an empty 20 litre container for extra diesel, I don't think we will need it, for the Canning. I hope we have kept the weight to a minimum.

Just checked the price of diesel at Ilkurlka and it is $2.40 and at Kunawarritji it is $3.20 per litre. That's just over $600 to fill the Prado. Trev

Final preparations like automatic watering for the gardens, fences around the garden to keep the deer, wombats, hares, rabbits and everything else out! Will turn the fridge on on Tuesday night to drag the temperature down ready for the frozen Kryovac meals. Have had the batteries checked to see if they will last the trip. The spread sheet below is a guide only and a rough one at that.

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I'm having trouble uploading the picks we have. But a few things; I have a set of tyre deflators which are set for different pressures. They take a while to do the four tyres but at least they all end up at the same pressure. I'm having trouble uploading photos I keep getting a message "Sorry, the board attachment quota has been reached."

Some help here for uploading images...

You need to host them off site as PP doesn't have the space to host images that's why you're getting that msg..

Well, I have done something so here goes.
We have kryovaced some meals so we can heat them up by boiling in water.
I've tried to keep the weight between the axles with the heavy stuff behing the seats. The spare spare wheel is behind me and the fridge behind Carol. The "barrier' is made from aluminium tubing with those rubber chair leg things to stop it from hitting the window. The carpet is from Bunnings. The tyre deflators are set at different pressures. It takes a while but at least all the tytres have the same pressure. Hope this works, wee, the pics. Cheers, Trev

which shows the outline of the trip. Once we get into central Queensland ir gets a bit hazy. if it goes pearshape we can turn right at Kunawarritji and come back via Alice Springs, or the Tanami Road or whatever. Cheers, Trev

As time ticks by and the panic has set in. Have we done all the jobs? Carol will drive me nuts in the car until she has remembered three things she has not done/forgotten/left turned on/still running or anything else. The freezer went down to -11 and is just about full with the kyrovac food and is a steady -4 degrees. I haven't worked out how I'm going to lift the freezer back into the car as it weighs a ton, well 25 kg plus the food. There is just enough fuel to go up and down through Kangaroo Valley and fuel up at Sallys Corner. Next fuel stop is Port Augusta 1400 km away. House sitters arrive tomorrow and there is enough firewood to last everyone a month. The 3G turbo thingy works as I sent an email with pic to our son in Zambia on the way to work. So we will try to report road conditions, fuel consumption and some pics on the way. I haven't bothered to wash the car, I've cleaned the windows, as it will be a mess in a couple of days. The bags with the clothing are in the living room and it will be a case of get them in and GO! We will try and do the next post while mobile south of Sallys corner. We only drive for two hours and take a break to make sure the thrombosis does not kick in. Once we get off the tar we are going to try and keep a record of the vehicles we see. I have a bee in my bonnet about these 4WD awards. If these things are the 4WD of the year/decade or any long time why aren't they out there with us in the rough stuff? It will be interesting. See you on the track. Cheers, Trev
