  • First epic trip

    G’day,

We are about to embark on our first epic trip in our Prado. For the NSW school holidays we are heading from the Central Coast, over to Broken Hill into SA, past Lake Eyre, across the Simpson over to Birdsville, then back home somehow. All of this is going to be dependant on the weather and track conditions.

Today Ainslie (the wife) and I packed the Prado so far so good, just a bag or two for clothes and we are off. Plan is to leave early to get to Broken Hill sometime on the first night and then be back at home with a day to spare before returning to work.

We are travelling with another 120 Prado (Ainslie’s uncle) but a petrol and a TD 200 series with all the fruit (another of Ainslie’s uncles). We hopefully we have everything as I am at work all week which will leave little time.

I wonder how many other Prado’s we will se?

    Cheers
2008 GXL Silver Ash D4D, XROX bar, Safari Snorkel, 3 inch Exhaust upgrade, Steinbauer chip, Bridgestone D694 LT's, front rated recovery hooks, recovery gear, GME UHF, Lightforce 240 Blitz, dual battery system and still plenty on the wish list!!

    Bundy made me do it!

Should be a great trip provided you don't get delayed or detoured by rain and water. Can't wait to see the outcome of your trip. That is truely magnificant country you are heading into.

              Re: First epic trip

We made it home safely from our first epic trip. It was awesome, fantastic, unreal and all the other positive expressions you can think of. We had a great time and about half way through we started planning our next epic trip! Not once did the Prado let us down in the 6,100km that we travelled and we never needed to get out the recovery gear either. How good are the D4D Prado's??!! We even did it on the stock Grandtrek rubber - hard to believe I know but it must be said that the dirt roads we generally recently graded. New tyres wont be too far away now though!! Good reason to go and get some spare rims for the AT or MT tyres - is that right wifey?!!!

There was plenty of dust, mud and road kill on the Prado when we got home. Plus the inside was covered in a nice layer of dust. So far i have given it a quick clean to tidy her up a bit. But i had some work to do to get all the mud out from the underneath. She is due for her next service, so I want to get it done before then.

Over the next few days we are going to put together a story on the trip which we will put up for everyone. Anyone thinking of heading to Lake Eyre/Simpson - all we can say is DO IT!

              cheers

              travis and ainslie

PS - we would like to thank Ainslies uncles who travelled with us and keep us pointing in the right direction - thanks guys.

                Re: First epic trip

Great to hear you made it Travis. Possibly a little risky using a highway tyre over the desert. With the pressure down on the tyres and the limited number of plys you greatly increase the chance of a staking. Look forward to some photos.
