  • Morgan Day trip pictures.

    Hi all.

I thought I would put up some pictures from a run to Morgan (South Aus) last weekend.

    Enjoy,

    Paul.

    Hi Paul
Congrats on the great pics. Looked like it was a fun weekend.
I know Morgan having come from SA originally. All our rellies are in SA.

BTW - those side rails look a bit too straight after negotiating those pesky rocks :?: :?:

Looks like a great spot there Paul, is that a quarry or tracks?
        Cheers, Leon
There's no such thing as a wrong turn... it's just the scenic route!

          It was a good day.

It is a combination of a small quarry area and a bunch of tracks.

Most of it is very basic, but there are a few good climbs and scrambles, resulting in a bunch of dents in the sub tank bash plate and the side steps becoming rainbow shaped (nothing a good "jumping on" did not fix )

Five minutes in, one vehicle clean sheered an axle, so it was parked for the rest of the day and driven home that afternoon, front wheel drive style.

          Paul.

PS. Credit to Chris for the photos.

            Tops photos Paul,

What sort of vehicle sheared an axle? Doesn't sound like fun.

              Looks like fun.

              Great pics.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

                Thanks guys.

                Drew,

It was a 110 Land Rover.

It was one of those short 99% imposable climbs, mongrel steep, and where your front wheels hit a ledge and the rears drop into the holes that have been carved by everyone that's tried in the past.

A mate gave it a shot in his Rangie, then Chris in the 110. After two or three attempts, BANG. The axle was pulled and it was a clean sheer just where the splines end.

I pointed the Prado up it, dragging the rear bumper as the nose went up but was stopped by the same ledge.

                Paul.

Paul, I have always been amazed how hard it is to take a photograph that accurately reflects how dam'n steep the climb or descent is.

No photo can match the view from the drivers seat, looking at the sky over the bonnet as you feel you are about to roll over backwards.

I agree about photos appearing to flatten steep hills. Taking the pic from side on helps but does anyone know any other techniques to get a more realistic photo?

                      Hey Mike

Laying down on your side - taking a shot up at the same angle as the climb works - but it's not real safe ! - you do need to stay out of the vehicle's line. Think about rocks being spun out by the wheels or the rig rolling back over the top of you

The average human head is around 6' off the ground which really flattens out the hill (I know - I'm only 4' 2" so all hills appear steeper  ) but getting the camera down to ground level can really enhance the angles.

Your eyes are designed to be able to provide all of the 'depth of vision' stuff that you need to appreciate the gnarly angles - the camera lens isn't - so you need to help it along. You can play around with a wider range of lenses for greater depth but I'd rather be running around in rocks and mud with an el cheapo digital than a $1000 'bells & whistles' camera.

                      My 2 cents.

                      Cheers

One other technique is to make sure you fill most of the frame with your car, at ground level. Gives a good accurate pic of the slope.

Also good to see your thumbs are sitting outside the steering wheel, as opposed to being inside it, candidate for broken thumbs when offroad.

true, i've got heaps of photo's where i thought it was bloody steep but looking at it later it didn't look that bad....

but if figure from yours, that standing behind a car that's over 6 feet tall, and seeing that much of the bonnet.... it's gotta be standing on it's rear legs!!!
