  • Is my 90 worth $8,000? Or what?

    I am considering selling my 90 series.

    Can anyone give me a guide to what its worth roundabout?

    My best friend has an LX470 that he's had for 12 years, and I am tempted to take it instead of my 90 series. Am I crazy? I've always liked his vehicle ...

    We use the 90 for camping, interstate mostly sailing trips and going to the snow, although last year we took my wife's RX350 instead of the Prado. Right now I have several cars but I do run the Prado once a week.

    It's an early one, a '97, auto V6 GXL, with a toyota alloy bull bar, "factory" air (installed back then by the dealer), Toyota tow bar (round plug) - only towed Sabots and Optimists (light weight kids sailing boats), non factory tinted windows (none on the passenger front as the window was broken outside Geelong Grammar in toorak as I was picking up a child and a thief stole my brief case), I changed the timing belt, plugs etc etc at 120K and at the same time I put put new variable rate coils and new shockers on it - I did that instead of buying a new 120 series. The new suspension rode and handled much much better and lifted it I think an inch or maybe two inches);

    I recently had to replace the starter motor, and when I got the vehicle back, the rear fuel pump light stopped working. The auto electricians did that IMO but I may have to replace that fuel pump ... that is all that has gone wrong with it, except for a couple of windscreens, and a recent rear guard that happened when it was parked outside my home. I bought it new, its Silver and now has 196k on it.

    The "D" light for the gear you are in on the dashboard also does not work. It has spot lights too (Toyota pack ones with the vehicle) and a bonnet plastic protector, and I am going to remove the headlight protectors (there since new too). I have had a set of rear rotors, they have 90% I think life on them still, the fronts too have been done, they have lots of life too I think ... country driving doesn't use the brakes I guess.

    I have off roaded it on the Landcruiser club training weekend (almost their first Prado too), I went to Lake Eyre and drove on sand hills there (I tagged along with some great guys I met buying an Ice Cream where the Ghan train used to stop), and also driving around Halls Gap which is our favourite camping area. Also the Little Desert, the dry lakes up near the Murray ... last decent camping was at Tidal River (but not real camping). Also found a great river spot near Moulamein which was handy to the road and deserted. We now have an OzTent setup and I have a AutoFridge which is Eutectic (no need for a second battery as they just need an hour a day running so I just keep a second spare battery for a jump start).

    Service was at the dealers and then the people who did the timing belt and suspension. Once the Toyota service guy said if ever I sell he'd like it, as I did not worry about their charges. But for the last few years I've just had basic service at Midas, who are a walk from my home.

    What is the best way to sell it? With a RWC?

    I test drove a 150 GXL diesel yesterday, and afterwards I thought its not so great ... the dash seems cramped up, the steering feels indirect ... I know people say they are costly, at over $60k for the auto, but then, I paid $50k for the 90!!! I reckon though that Toyota will surely install a V6 higher performance diesel in the Prado so I am not tempted with one of those ... but if there was a powerful diesel, I'd sell the RX350 and get one of those I reckon. So the LX470 will be the camping vehicle for a few years I reckon unless someone convinces me I am mad to get an LX ...

    But first, I need to get an idea what I'll actually get for my 90 series! And Oh, mine does not have ABS or air bags! I did not want ABS back then - I still am not keen on it on dirt roads.

    Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.
